**Kavo DIAGNOdent
.
(Laser
Fluorescence for Caries Detection). City Kids
Dental is also equipped with the innovative technology of KaVo's DIAGNOdent. This tool helps Dr. Mary determine the degree of dental caries, especially in places not easily seen, such as in the pits and fissures on the chewing surfaces of teeth. This is where 80% of decay occurs. The DIAGNOdent painlessly measures laser fluorescence within tooth structure. This device detects hidden or subsurface cavities that are undiagnosed by x-rays and dental instruments. Healthy teeth exhibit little or no fluorescence. However, carious tooth structure will exhibit fluorescence proportionate to the degree of caries. The DIAGNOdent displays numeric values that correlate to the extent of decay.

By using this tool, Dr. Mary is able to detect caries early in a safe and painless manner (without x-ray exposure) and promote minimally invasive treatment. Intercepting the carious process at an early stage leads to a conservative tooth preparation that preserves sound tooth structure and increases the structural integrity of the tooth. It also provides Dr. Mary with quantifiable data to objectively monitor
teeth
over time, place sealants with confidence, and prevent over or under treatment of teeth.
***Fluoride Varnish.....A New Way to Reduce your Toddlers Childhood Decay
Toddlers who have fluoride varnish applied to their teeth by a dentist twice a year are four times less likely to get cavities in their baby teeth, according to a recent study.
The varnish is painted directly onto the teeth with a small brush, much like a nail polish application. It is much easier for young children to tolerate than fluoride trays. The fluoride varnish remains on the tooth surfaces for four to six hours. This facilitates maximal fluoride uptake and strengthens the tooth's surface making it more resistant to the decay process. Fluoride varnish also minimizes the risk of inadvertent fluoride ingestion.
The ADA considers fluoride varnish to be safe and efficacious as part of a caries prevention program that includes caries diagnosis, risk assessment, and regular dental care.
